name : Katharina Chen / Chen Xu Ying city : Hong Kong. age : d.o.b. : September 1, 1981 zodiac : Virgo alignment : Kamui / Angel. eyes : Brown. hair : Black. religion : Protestant. family : Anthony (father), Anita (mother), Christian (older brother). powers : Photokinesis; manipulation of light. Xu Ying can bend the light around herself to become invisible, generate blasts of energy and create forcefields. Once she chooses a side, she'll be able to mentally repulse photons, thus creating areas of complete darkness, as well as having a boost on all her other abilities. |
Born on the 1st of September in Brighton, England to Cantonese parents, Chen Xu Ying was automatically granted a British citizenship, as well as being a legal resident of the British colony of Hong Kong. Her father, Anthony Chen, a restaurant chef aged 28, had moved out of the city and to Great Britain three years prior, because he could not stand the heat and humidity the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong created. Her mother, Anita Chen, a retired beauty queen and former participant in Miss Hong Kong, aged 26, met him two years before they moved to England on a game show where she played hostess, and the contestants had to eat various sorts of food Anthony cooked. Xu Ying and her older brother Chiu Wai were never told their parents' Cantonese names. Anita and Anthony wanted to integrate their children into British society as much as possible and thus only used their English names, as well as Katharina and Christian for their children. Katharina introduced herself as Xu Ying anyway. As is the regular custom of Chinese families living abroad, Katharina and Christian both had huge pressure on them to succeed. They were also both, from a very early age (Christian was six, Katharina five), enrolled in music academy and were allowed to pick one instrument each to play. Katharina chose the violin because she liked how the name rolled off her tongue, Christian the piano. Growing up with rehearsal, Sunday school to learn Cantonese and Mandarin sufficiently, while also expected to ace all her regular classes, Katharina turned into a workaholic by the time she was fourteen. It got to the point where she just worked because it was expected, played because she needed to for the next concert, memorized kanji to get full marks on the tests her father put her through, even after she had finished Sunday school at 12. When her mother proposed the idea of her becoming a pageant contestant, Katharina stared at her for a very long time before getting up and leaving the house. She didn't come back for a week, nor did she tell anyone where she'd been, even after being physically shaken for ten minutes by her father and cried at for an hour by her mother. She did, however, agree to participate in beauty pageants, which seemed to placate her parents enough. The only person she told was Christian, and while he had trouble believing what she told him at first, he had to accept the fact that she was destined to change the world in her 17th year, that she'd gone to London, met a tarot reader and spent a week in seclusion after being told the world was ending, after she bent the light around herself and disappeared from view. Katharina herself accepted it without so much as a second thought. She'd accepted everything her parents and teachers and tutors had thrown at her for 15 years of her life, why should she not accept something quite as ludicrous as expecting a twelve year old to master Flight of the Bumblebee flawlessy within three weeks? She'd done that, she could do this. Accepting her mother's plea for dressing her daughter up and making her parade down a catwalk was a good way to get to go to Hong Kong without having to argue with either of her parents. And so they went, in Katharina's 16th year. That is, Anita, Christian and Katharina went, Anthony stayed behind. Katharina didn't mind, it just meant she had one less parent to somehow ship back to England before she was to meet everyone who was going to help her choose. With the help of Christian, who was by then a legal adult, she managed to have her mother on a plane back home within six months, promising to behave and study and rehearse and play dress-up like the devoted daughter she was. And listen to what Christian said at all tmes. Neither sibling was very worried about their ability to survive in Hong Kong, and due to their strict upbringing, found it was much easier to do all those things their parents wanted them to do without having them there to correct and disapprove until they were finally satisfied with the finished product. Katharina had much more free time, and took to wandering the city once she'd finished her homework, trying to find someone who was affiliated with the end, as she was. |
Katharina is somewhat twofaced. She's the model student, perfect girl with strangers, smiling and curtesying and being polite, picture perfect, everyone wants to be around her, everyone likes her because she's helpful and smart and witty. She TAs when she can, if someone asks, she'll do what they want her to as long as it is not something that would put her in a bad light. It was how she was raised to be. The real Katharina is bitter, introverted, introspective and extremely calculating. While she does all these things people ask her because it's second nature now, it's like she's in autopilot and her mouth says yes before her mind can agree, she's still thinking all these things. "Why can't they do it themselves? Why ask me? Why do I get called on?" She's really only herself around Christian, who understands why she has turned out like this, yet might find his sister too negative at times. She likes to be left alone, but isn't usually, so she adapts, but possesses a lot of negative thoughts about anyone who bothers her. And still, she'll be perfectly curteous and friendly, she just won't voice any of her pessimistic views, nor give any hint she possesses them at all. Deep down, she just might be very repressed. Her personality has split, she only shows the light and happy side of her, it's been torn so much in two she's almost incapable of being actually happy because she fakes optimism so much. |
Very very slim and has raven hair down her back. She usually keeps it down because her mother has always advised that's the way she's prettiest. Even in sweltering heat, she won't put it up. Fair of skin, even for being Cantonese and she doesn't tan easily. Katharina dresses in mostly black to contrast her skin, as well as some deep red for concerts and whatnot, she is very careful to always look her best, whether it includes smelling nice or simply have clean clothes and look like she's just finished blowdrying her hair. She has a small frame and anyone looking at her might think her slightly frail because of her slim figure. |
